Amelia Carr

‘Ameliorate’ = “To Make Something Better”:

I am an expert vocal coach and singing teacher specialising in teaching children and young singers in Musical Theatre. I work extensively with those in professional theatre, TV and film. I also teach professional adults (kids grow up!)

I currently teach 1-2-1 and group singing lessons privately online, in the West End, and with a few appointments in my hometown of Worthing. I have worked for many full-time professional schools and colleges teaching singing, most currently at Laine Theatre Arts. Previously I have worked at Mountview, Bird College, London Studio Centre, and Emil Dale Academy as well as with Spirit Young Performers Company.
For the past 18 years, I have had the utter pleasure of working with exceptional young voices through 1-2-1 coaching, working at some pretty incredible colleges and schools, and through running a successful performing arts school in the South of England. For 13 years I produced award-winning full-scale youth Musicals for ages 5 through 18 which has set me out as a uniquely skilled teacher of young voices.

I run workshops for teachers of singing. I love to pass on my knowledge and share what I am confident in and I am passionate about improving the resources teachers can access for teaching children and teens in their singing lessons. I also enjoy running Masterclasses for young people auditioning for performing arts colleges and musical theatre courses.

I have availability for singing lessons, vocal coaching, performance anxiety coaching, and mentoring. I use a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve the best vocal outcome for each individual singer.

The changing voice is a growing voice, which means I also take adult clients from the professional musical theatre field and I enjoy singers from multi-genres at times. Amateur clients are accepted upon request.
Running with the belief that 'you’re not a singing teacher until your student has learnt something’ (Jenevora Williams), I would describe myself as a passionate, motivational teacher with a wealth of experience, skill and knowledge to help you identify the vocal tools of your trade and to thrive vocally.
Performance, Training & Credits: I received my training at Bird College and London Studio Centre. Performing credits include Kathy Selden (Singing In The Rain), Maria (Sound of Music), Nellie (South Pacific), Polly Baker (Crazy for You), Young Sally (Follies), Edith (Oh What A Lovely War), Edith (Pirates of Penzance), Sandy (Grease), Hodel (Fiddler On The Roof), Louise (Carousel), Dorothy (Wizard of Oz).
Coaching & Teaching Credits:
Gypsy (Manchester), Back to the future (London), Hairspray (UK Tour and RCC), Sound of Music (Chichester Festival Theatre), Annie (UK TOUR), Mrs Doubtfire (London), Grease (London), Les Miserables (London), Starlight Express (Germany), Adrian Mole (London), Mamma Mia (London, Royal Caribbean, UK Tour), Six The Musical (Norwegian Cruises, London), Anything Goes (London), Mary Poppins (Uk Tour), 42nd Street (London), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Uk Tour), Matilda (London), Fiddler on The Roof (London), Book of Mormon (London), Saturday Night Fever (Royal Caribbean), Motown the Musical (London), Honk The Musical (London, Uk Tour), Superheros (London), 13 The Musical (London),  Lion King (London), Rent (London), Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (London), We will Rock You (Royal Caribbean), Gypsy (Chichester Festival Theatre, London), Forty Years On (Chichester Festival Theatre) Grease (Uk Tour), Glyndebourne Youth Opera, NYMT (National Youth Music Theatre).I am currently teaching a ladies Prison Choir, a role I adopted in 2019 due to my passion to use singing as a rehabilitation and wellbeing tool.

Coaching and Teaching Qualifications:I completed an MA with Distinction in Vocal Pedagogy with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2019. My voice research remains focused on Teaching Young Voices in Musical Theatre, Performance Anxiety, and Performance Enhancement for children in professional Musical Theatre. Prior to the MA, I received a Distinction for a PGCert in Vocal Pedagogy with Cardiff Metropolitan University which was also specialising in teaching young voices within professional musical theatre.
I hope to write a book and keep studying voice. Basically, I love my job, I love my art and I invest in it fully.
I am a member of the British Voice Association (BVA), National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS). I hold a Fellowship in Ballet (IDTA) as well as an Associate in Tap and Modern Jazz (IDTA) which I threw myself through as part of running a successful performing arts school for 10 years.
I hold a DBS, First Aid and Insurance. I am Mental Health First Aider and Youth Mental Health First Aider.

When not enjoying the progress of my students, ‘#CurlyCoach’ will be found sipping on a flat white, curls flowing from an eccentric hair bow. I love my dog, Bruce, climibing trees and playing in mud with my 2 year old and especially enjoy getting beaten at Scrabble by my hubby! I'm a self-confessed Fanilow, and enjoy an eclectic music taste. Other interests of mine include helping the homeless, I have a big heart for this work and all I can to support local homelessness where I live.

Hannah - 2020

Parent

Amelia Carr is just brilliant. My daughter found her in lockdown. Her confidence was lacking and Amelia has mentored her as well as vocal coaching. She now is responsible for her own practice and goal setting. Not only does she give children an invaluable grounding in technique and craft but she mentors the children developing their individual goals. This has given my child a much improved technique, a list of exercises that help her with areas of weakness, a good repertoire, acting through song coaching and last but not least a growing confidence in her abilities. Amelia nurtures passion with gentle grounding enabling children to critique their own work in reflection. Amelia is so full of ideas energy and really connects to young people wanting to break this industry.
